Red Cross: Earmark Haiti Donations, But Don't Forget Local Folks in Need

Chattanooga's chapter of the American Red Cross has seen a huge jump in donations from local folks giving to disaster victims in Haiti.

Spokeswoman Claudia Moore tells NewsChannel 9 this week the local office has been swamped with mail filled with donations to the Haiti recovery effort.

This comes just a week after Moore issued a plea for donations to help out local families the Red Cross has helping, many of them victims of fire.

Moore says the local chapter will send along any local donations earmarked for the Haiti relief effort, but, as is common practice, will keep any donations not specifically designated for Haiti to help its local fund. That means people who want to send money to Haiti but don't designate it will have their money instead spent closer to home.

Moore says she issued the plea for local help last week because the month of January has seen a higher-than-average number of families needing help after losing everything they own to fire.

Moore plans to release more specific numbers on how much money local donors are sending to Haiti later this week.
